Getting Involved

I am feeling a huge sense of responsibility to keep moving forward and make a difference in some way. In addition to looking for work in social justice and activism, I am looking to join organizations where I can volunteer.

There are so many great nonprofits out there that need support. Just putting out a google for social justice organizations in Florida returns more than 25,000,000 results.

I am currently volunteering with Equality Florida - the statewide civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. On Sunday, we were at St. Pete Pride getting pledges to stand against DeSantis’ censorship policies and encouraging volunteer registration.

I was also approached by the Manatee County League of Women Voters about getting involved, as well. This nonpartisan organization works to promote informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. I’ve since joined the League and hope to help with fighting for equitable education policies in our state.

As I go forward, I’ve met lots of fabulous people all working to make a difference. I’ve also learned that there a lot of ways to help make an impact.

If you feel strongly about an issue, get involved. Do a little research, find an organization you can support through time, talent, or treasure. Even a couple of hours a month will make a difference.

Go get ‘em!
